May is International Masturbation Month—a time dedicated to normalizing, celebrating, and destigmatizing solo pleasure. And on May 28th, many of us will also recognize International Masturbation Day. Far from being a taboo or shameful act, masturbation is a natural, healthy form of sexual expression—one that offers a cascade of benefits, from stress relief and improved sleep to deeper self-awareness and sexual confidence.
During and after orgasm, the body releases several hormones and neurotransmitters that contribute to the feeling of pleasure, bonding, and relaxation. Key chemicals include dopamine, oxytocin, endorphins, and prolactin.
Dopamine
This neurotransmitter is associated with pleasure and reward, contributing to the euphoric feelings experienced during orgasm.
Oxytocin
Often called the "love hormone," oxytocin is released during orgasm and promotes feelings of connection, bonding, and intimacy with a partner.
Endorphins
These are natural pain relievers and also contribute to feelings of euphoria and relaxation after orgasm.
Prolactin
Released after orgasm, prolactin contributes to feelings of relaxation and sleepiness.
In addition, other hormones and neurotransmitters like serotonin, vasopressin, and nitric oxide may also be involved in the post-orgasmic experience.
Yet, like any intimate practice, the way we experience masturbation evolves over time. For me, the journey from my twenties to my fifties has been one of transformation—from viewing self-pleasure as a quick release before bed to embracing it as a rich, sensual, and deeply personal ritual.
So, in honor of Masturbation May, I want to explore how solo sex has changed for me across the decades—and why, for many of us, pleasure only deepens with age.
As Dr. Emily Nagoski says, pleasure is a skill we hone, not just a reflex. And for many women, the real erotic awakening comes after youth’s frenetic energy wanes.
It’s not just for women. It’s all I have, an old man with an illness desexualized marriage. The pleasure is intense and the mental scope is beyond bounds…yes, God bless May!
